Pictura rupestra, Altamira

altamira desene preistorice

One day in 1879, five-year-old Maria de Sautuola and her father, Don Marcelino de Sautuola, explored the cave of Altamira on his estate in nourthern Spain. Suddenly Don Marcelino heard her cry out, “ Toros! Toros!”. He found her staring at the ceiling of the cavern. It was covered with huge bison, painted in red and black. They were drawn so skillfully that they seemed almost alive. Elsewhewre in the cave Don Marcelino found pictures of horses, deer, and wild boars. He was convinced that the pictures were made by primitive people. Maria’s discovery made the cave of Altamira famous... By 1900, scientists generally accepted cave art as the work of primitive people. The lifelike and colorful cave paintings at Altamira were at least 20 thousand years old...

P.S.   Archaeologists are the scientists who specialize in a branch of anthropology. They excavate, classify and study the remains of ancient cultures.
